In November, students from our Deep Divers and Rising Stars programs participated in the AMC-10 competition. AMC- 10 is a very difficult 75-minute 25-question test of high school contest math for students in Grade 10 or younger. The scoring system discourages guessing, thus making the test a genuine trial of math skills.
AMC-10 is the first step in a series of competitions. Roughly 2,000 of the best AMC-10 scorers are invited to American Invitational Mathematics Exam (AIME). Most of these are older students. In recent years, only about 200 seventh graders and fewer than 100 sixth graders nationwide made AIME. Making AIME in seventh grade or younger is a mark of a true champion.
This year, 16 Mr. Math students qualified for AIME, including three 7th graders, four 6th graders, and two 5th graders! In the Rising Stars These students are (grade in parenthesis) Alexander B (8), Alexander W (8), Ayaan K (8), Bella L (9), Conrad B (5), Derek X (8), Douglas Z (6), Isaac S (7), Leo R (9), Lucas X (6), Luke Z (7), Michael Z (6), Owen H (8), Paris C (7), Rohan S (6), Shuyan L (6), Siyona A (8), and Storry J (5).
We also want to note that 9 out of our 17 Rising Stars who participated in AMC-10 qualified for AIME! Not in a small part, this success is shared by the program mentors – Amritha P, Chris S, David C, Max Z, Rohan P, Samuel H, Shihan C, and Tarun R – the amazing champions who share their skills in math and their wisdom with their mentees.
While qualifying for AIME is a rare and truly exceptional achievement at such a young age, a more reasonable target for very talented young students is to score 90+. In fact, the contest recognizes this as an Achievement Roll for anyone in Grade 8 or younger who scores 90+.
This year 29 Mr. Math students made Achievement Roll, including eleven 8th graders, seven 7th graders, seven 6th graders, two 5th graders, and two 4th graders! In addition to the AIME qualifiers listed above, students who made Achievement Roll are (grade in parenthesis): Caden C (8), Isaac L (6), James L-C (7), Jed S (8), Krish B (8), Liam C (4), Nate F (7), Nathan Y. (4), Nathaniel Z (7), Noah S (8), Nolan W (6), Ryan L (8), Viyan S (7), and Ziqi Z (6).
We are thrilled by the success of our students.
