MathCounts is the most important math competition for middle school students. The competition is made of multiple rounds. Nearly 250,000 students start in school round, and the best 4-10 students from each school compete in Chapter rounds. The best teams and individuals from each Chapter are invited to the State round. Finally, the Top 4 students from each State make the National finals, where they meet in May to determine the National Champion. Making Top-56 in the finals is a special achievement, as only the Top-56 names are published.
Students in Grade 6-8 are allowed to participate. Of course, it is very hard for 6th and 7th graders to succeed competing among the older kids. Whenever younger students make later rounds, it is an exceptional success.
Many of our students and alumni participated this year. Here is the summary of the results:
National Finals:
Making Nationals is a crown jewel accomplishments for every top mathlete. Only 224 best students in the country make the finals every year. Among the finalists this year are:
State Finals:
Making State finals is a target for all talented students. Only about 200 students in each state qualify. 78 of our students made State Finals this year, including 23 sixth graders and 22 seventh graders! Those students will be eligible to compete again next year (and sixth graders can compete for two more years). Among them, two finished as State Champions, 12 finished in Top-10 in their States, 21 in Top-20 and 27 in Top-30.
James S (a 7th grader from Texas) and William W (and 8th grader from Illinois) are both state champions! That is an amazing feat! William W was also a state champion last year as well!
