Mr. Math Rising Stars Shine in AMC-10

December 16, 2024
14 out of 22 Rising Stars qualify for AIME, 20 make Achievement Roll!!!

In November, students from our Rising Stars program participated in the AMC-10 competition. AMC- 10 is a very difficult 75-minute 25-question test of high school contest math for students in Grade 10 or younger. The scoring system discourages guessing, thus making the test a genuine trial of math skills.

AMC-10 is the first step in a series of competitions. Roughly 2,000 of the best AMC-10 scorers are invited to American Invitational Mathematics Exam (AIME). Most of these are older students. In recent years, only about 200 7th graders and fewer than 100 6th graders nationwide made AIME. Making AIME in 7th grade or younger is a mark of a true champion.

This year, 14 out of 22 Mr. Math Rising Stars and one Deep Divers student qualified for AIME, including eight 7th graders, two 6th graders, and three 5th graders! These students are (grade in parenthesis) Albert L (7), Alexander B (7), Aayan K (7), Bella L (8), Caden C (7), Derek X (7), Isaac C-O (7), Isaac S (6), James S (6), John X (7), Leo S (8), Lucas X (5), Michael Z (5), Owen H (7), and Rohan S (5).

While qualifying for AIME is a rare and truly exceptional achievement at such a young age, a more reasonable target for very talented young students is to score 90+. In fact, the contest recognizes this as an Achievement Roll for anyone in Grade 8 or younger who scores 90+.

This year 20 Mr. Math Rising Stars and 5 students from our other programs made Achievement Roll, including three 8th graders, nine 7th graders, four 6th graders, four 5th graders, and one 3rd grader! In addition to the AIME qualifiers listed above, students who made Achievement Roll are (grade in parenthesis): James L-C (6), Leo R (8), Luke Z (6), Nate F (6), Nathan Y (3), Nolan W (5), Patrick C (8), Viyan S (6), Zimo L (7), and Ziqi Z (4).

We are thrilled by the success of our students! They truly deserve their program designation – Rising Stars!!!

Not in a small part, this success is shared by the program mentors – Amritha P, Andrew B, Chris S, David C, David L, Max Z, Nate M, Samuel H, Tarun R, and Victor C – the amazing champions who share their skills in math and their wisdom with their mentees.
