About
Brian Rice
Skipper, Deep Divers Level Y & Teacher

Brian Rice grew up in a small town in southwest Virginia.  He always liked math, but really fell in love during a three-week summer camp between middle school and high school, where he learned that, amazingly, not all math had already been discovered, and that fascinating patterns and beautiful proofs were hiding everywhere.  On returning, he begged and pleaded until his high school let him register for the AMC.  One thing led to another and he ended up a three-time USAMO qualifier and one-time USAMO Winner, and won in the mathematics category at the International Science and Engineering Fair with an original research project.  Meanwhile he spent several amazing summers at the Canada/USA Mathcamp and MOP stuffing his brain with as much mathematics as possible.

Brian has a B.S. in mathematics from Harvey Mudd College and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He spent four years as a math professor before changing careers to his current day job of software engineering.  He is a participant and problem contributor at Project Euler, a compendium of problems that combine mathematics and programming.

He enjoys writing, vegetable gardening, intellectually challenging computer games, and talking about cool math problems with anyone who is willing to listen.
