About
Griffin Macris
Teacher

Griffin Macris discovered the beautiful and intricate world of mathematics at a young age. Participation in local, state, and eventually international science fairs taught them that mathematical research and creative problem solving could be useful and worthwhile even (especially!) for kids! After receiving the First Place Award for the American Mathematical Society's Karl Menger Memorial Prize, Griffin knew for sure how much they loved tackling new and creative problems. Going through middle school, high school, and eventually a math degree from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, the love for teaching mathematics has been a constant part of life. After graduating college, they started working with kids of a large variety of ages, teaching everything from reading and math to SAT prep and college level material.

Griffin also has a huge appreciation for how powerful mathematical ideas are when solving programming problems, and likewise how helpful it is to know how to make a computer compute things when you have a really tough math problem! Even when using pencil and paper, knowing how to think rigorously and algorithmically is a very useful skill in mathematics and in everything else. Griffin is a long time Project Euler problem solver, and has contributed several original problems to the website over the past decade.

These days, they most enjoy helping students see a new appreciation for the strength and elegance of mathematics. Most of the time, if you ask, Griffin is working on some compelling math problem or another, and will gladly spend a few hours trying to get you interested as well.
